All of my life I’ve loved stories involving mythology, fables and legends; so when I stumbled upon a book entitled, “Mantequero” by Jenny Twist, I was hooked. The Mantequero is a fabled beautiful man in Spain who walks around at night seeking vulnerable, overweight women who he literally loves to death. He does this by sucking the fat right off of their bodies. Yea, I wouldn’t mind shedding a few pounds. The story is written as a series of three short novellas. The first two stories are adult and the final tale entitled, “Sins of the Father,” is YA.In this story, high school student, Rupert Jones is the son born to a travel agent Mom who barely escaped the clutches of the Mantequero. He is unaware of who is father was or of the crimes he has committed. He is just a shy, unassuming, Geek. Rupert is also very intelligent but socially stunted until one day at school he finds himself enamored with the very overweight and talented, Samantha Parkin, from his English Lit class. Like most overweight people, Samantha is teased unmercifully. She is call ‘Piggy Parkin’ or Miss Peggy. Rupert doesn’t care about how others feel. He just sees a beautiful girl. As Rupert and Samantha get to know each other, they realize that until Rupert discovers more about his past, they can never truly move their relationship forward to its’ full potential. The question is who does dear sweet Rupert take after, mother or father?
Jenny Twist has an incredible gift of world building and in catapulting the reader right into the midst of the action. I loved the characters of Rupert and Samantha. Together there is a sweetness between them; yet, you also get the feeling that there is something ominous lurking behind their otherwise docile relationship. I. Love. These. Books and you will too! I understand that the first book, “Mantequero” is being offered for free for a short time only. Run, don’t walk to download these books. The Mantequero is one of the most unique and enjoyable reads you will ever encounter.

I was looking forward to this sequel since reading the second Mantequero book, and must say, I was not disappointed! Once again we have plucky heroines, handsome heroes fighting against their base evil instincts, and townspeople in a mob with torches and pitchforks! A wonderful addition to the series, and now I'm eagerly awaiting book #4. Get writing, Mrs. Twist!

The Mantequero is an urban legend In Spain. He is noted to be a "Modern Day Vampire" possibly a serial killer. Not much is known about him, but in this fascinating, chilling, thrilling story we get to meet The Mantequero. A fantastic spin on modern day Vampires. Truly brilliant!
Great as a stand-alone, (but) I strongly recommend reading all of The Mantequero books. Tales of the Mantequero is fantastic, it is a compilation of all of the Mantequero stories.
